International mission trip photos
I have been fortunate enough to go on two international mission trips, one each summer for the last two years. In 2013, I went to Zambia to work with orphaned children in two main cities - Lusaka, the capital, and Siavonga, a rural area of Zambia. In 2014, I went to Costa Rica to work with orphans and victims of modern-day slavery.
I often share stories from my trips with my students. We read a lot of articles about other places in the world. One of my foundational educational beliefs is that we all need to become aware of what life is like outside our small realm of Gainesville. We read articles about countries without access to clean drinking water, and we talk about Africa. I will share my photos with the students as we discuss how life is different there. We do some reading about Central America, and I will share stories of the differences in their culture and ours. I believe it is important to remember that while our lives have difficult moments, we truly have so much for which we can be grateful.
There were many places, in both Costa Rica and Africa, where we were not allowed to take pictures in order to protect the privacy of the people and children we met. What you see here are pictures from the places we were allowed to take photos.
